Developmental
Screenings
|
All children develop at different rates and achieve developmental milestones in a range of what is considered typical. When should a parent, caregiver, or physician be concerned about a child's rate of development or acquisition of skills? At times, it is helpful to obtain an assessment by a professional specifically trained in the area of development. This can include a speech, occupational, or physical therapy screening for assessment of language, fine/sensory motor, and gross motor skills.
A screening is a more cost effective alternative to determine if a mild concern warrants further investigation and possible intervention. A parent can contact High Hopes for a screening in one, two, or all areas if any developmental "red flags" are noticed. "Red Flags" are behaviors or skills that are slightly atypical and could represent a concern. A sampling is listed below by area of development:
Language (SPEECH)
• Unclear Speech
After Age 2
• Persistent Stuttering
After Age 3
• Limited Vocabulary
(Less than10 words at Age 2) |
Fine Motor/Sensory (OT)
• Weak Grasp
• Poor Handwriting
• Overly Sensitive to Touch/Sound
• Strong Food Aversions |
Gross Motor (PT)
• Persistent Toe Walking
• Delayed Walking 16-18 mos.
• Frequent Falls After Age 2
• Significant Delays in
Balance and Coordination
|
Screenings are available for a nominal charge of $50 for one discipline, $80 for two, and $100 for all three. If a significant area of delay is identified through the screening process, a recommendation will be made for a full evaluation. At this time, insurance can be accessed and the screening fee paid by the parents will be applied to the co-pay, coinsurance, or deductible.
Following the screening, a brief report will be provided to the family and physician regarding recommendations.
